Copper earrings featuring deep golden yellow Mookaite lantern shaped beads with a pair of twisted oval hand crafted charms with a grain like imprint, antiqued to bring out the textures.
Mookaite is a Jasper stone found exclusively in Australia and comes in a range of deep reds, pinks and gold colours from the area of Mooka Creek, hence the name, also variously spelled Mookite, Moukaite, Mookalite etc.
The twisted oval charms have been hand made from copper clay, impressed with a wood grain texture, cut and hand formed and later highly polished and antiqued to highlight the pattern. The ovals hang and move freely at the bottom of double wire wrapped drops featuring two deep golden coloured Mookaite lantern shaped beads. The texture on the oval charms made me think of a wild tiger, slinking silently through jungle shadows, so chose to team them with lovely golden colours of the Mookaite.
What is copper clay / precious metal clay?
Copper clay is a clay like medium made from tiny particles of copper (other metals are available too), combined with an organic binder and made into a pliable clay or paste with water. After working with the clay-like medium to form the article, it is thoroughly dried to remove all of the water, the shape is then further refined and then fired at high temperature to both burn off the binders and to cause the copper particles to fuse together as solid metal. Whilst the medium makes it possible to achieve things not possible with other metal forms, it is still quite time-consuming and there are several stages to achieving a nice finish.
The earrings drop 47mm (1.85") overall from the top of the classic shaped wire wrapped earwires and hang 12mm (½") at their widest in wear.
